The winter sports season is officially upon the State of Iowa and there is plenty of upcoming action for Greene County High School.
For the Rams, the winter season means the start of boys and girls basketball, boys wrestling and boys and girls bowling to get excited about.
For the girls basketball team, they will be looking to rebound after going 1-21 in consecutive seasons. Their wins the last few years have both been against Saydel, 43-31 in 2023, and 51-46 in 2024.
Points have been hard to come by in recent years as in their last season they averaged just over 28 points a game while giving up just over 58 a game. The first matchup for the girls is slated against Woodward-Granger on Nov. 26.
For the Rams boys basketball team, they are coming off a 2-20 overall record. Their record doesn’t tell the whole story: five of their losses came by just single digits and five of them were decided by less than 20 points but more than 10.
Last year’s team was senior heavy as there were eight players who graduated and the other six will be this year’s seniors. The Rams will be looking to return to their form from just a few seasons ago where they finished 10-13 overall. The first game for the Rams boys is set for Dec. 2 against Ogden in Jefferson.
Rams wrestling is just around the corner. Wrestling at Greene County will begin with a match on Dec. 3 at PCM High School. Those in attendance will be the Rams, Ogden, Van Meter and PCM.
Last season was extremely successful as the Rams sent four to the state tournament in Gavyn Winters, Degan Miller, Gavin Scheuermann and Brent Dennhardt. Of those, three should return as Scheuermann was the lone senior who competed at the state tournament.
Last up for seasons that are set to get underway is the boys and girls bowling seasons at Greene County.
For the girls and boys squads their season will get underway with a meet at Alley Bowl in Osceola against Clarke on Nov. 25.
The Greene County Rams will look to enjoy all the upcoming winter sports seasons as the winter months can be very intensive with indoor sports.
